Thank You For Last Night

I have the silliest grin on my face because I was woken up twice last night.

The first time I’d been asleep for about an hour. I’d taken my medicine, brushed my teeth, and crawled under the duvet with a good book.

Read until my head started to swim.

Sometimes when I’m reading before bed, the book doesn’t quite make it to the nightstand. Some mornings I wake up and find it tucked under my pillow, like a gift from the Story Fairy. (Tale Fairy? That’d be closer to fairy tale.)

Anyway, last night that didn’t happen. The book made it to the nightstand, but only just. And I fell dead sleep.

But an hour later, I woke in the night because you were holding me. Running your hands over my body. The PG-rated parts. Nothing too dicey. I’ll be honest: There was nothing exciting about it, not at the beginning. It admittedly was a little awkward at first. I wasn’t quite oriented to where you were, what was even going on. I wasn’t quite turned the right way for it to be comfortable.

And to be honest, I was a little warm. But I kicked one leg out from under the covers and turned my body back to yours. And what started out as innocent cuddling began to change into something else entirely.

It was good sex. Passionate. Unexpected. Intense.

You fell asleep right away, right after. I picked up my book from the nightstand and read for about 45 minutes, finished the book.

And then I fell back asleep, glowing, loving my body more for having mingled it with yours so intensely and so unexpectedly.

The second time I woke up was in the morning — earlier than I had to be up but late enough that most people wouldn’t consider it “late night” anymore. The leading edge of that time of day when people get up and shower and head out to their day jobs.

It was a bit earlier than either of us needed to be up. But the sky was booming. The air was shaking from a violent thunderstorm. One I probably should have known was coming but didn’t, on account of there being no tornadic risk to this weather pattern.

Anyway, it’s later now. We’ve both been working all day. And yet I can’t stop smiling. Can’t stop thinking about how there were two big storms last night. The second one may have been louder, but the first one shook me harder.

Thank you for last night. Hope you’re having a good day.
